Physical Protection of Your Data

  • Manage your mailbox. Watch for missing mail and bills that don't arrive on time. Consider using our Online Bill Pay, a secure method of paying your bills online. Eliminate worry of lost or stolen checks by using Direct Deposit to directly deposit paychecks into your account. Arrange to have recurring loan or line of credit payments automatically deducted from your account.
  • Trash with care. Thoroughly shred anything with an account number on it, including credit offers you get in the mail. Delete all personal information before you dispose of a computer by reformatting the hard drive.
  • Monitor your accounts. Carefully review your monthly statements for unauthorized charges. Exercise even more caution after trips where you used ATMs, credit or debit cards more frequently. To keep more frequent watch of your transactions, enroll in Online Banking.
  • Review your credit regularly. Order a copy of your credit report at least once a year to check for accounts that may have been opened without your knowledge and unauthorized changes to your existing accounts. Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act), you're entitled to annually request and obtain a free credit report. provides you with a secure way to do so, and each of the three major credit bureaus also offers ongoing monitoring programs.
  • Release your Social Security Number prudently. Avoid printing your SSN on your checks or using your SSN as your driver's license number. Do not carry your SSN card with you.
  • Protect the contents of your purse or wallet. Keep a list of all your credit card and bank account numbers, expiration dates, and telephone numbers of the customer service and fraud departments. Sign credit cards immediately upon receipt. Cancel unused credit cards. Know credit card expiration dates; if you do not receive a reissued card before the expiration date, notify the card issuer. For our cardholders, we support MasterCard and Visa Zero Liability Fraud Protection programs that protect you from unauthorized transactions on your credit card when you promptly notify us.
  • Keep your personal numbers secure. Do not carry passwords with you. Shield the keypad when using ATMs. Place passwords on your credit card and bank accounts and avoid using anything identifying that a thief could discover. If you're an Online Banking user, we also recommend that you regularly change your login password.
  • Guard your privacy. Ask businesses what their privacy policies are, how they will use your information and whether it will be provided to third parties. Click here to review our Privacy Policy.

E-mail and Online Protection

Keep your computer and online experience safe. Whenever providing personal information via the web - such as when completing an application - use a secure Internet connection, a firewall, an up-to-date anti-virus software and anti-spyware software. Look for a padlock in the lower right-hand corner of your web browser and an "https" (not http) in your web browser address to indicate your connection is secure. A secure connection prevents anyone other than the intended target from accessing your information as it travels over the Internet. Additionally,

  • Always log off to end your online session and turn off automatic login features that save your user name and password.
  • Keep your personal numbers secure. If you're an Online Banking customer, we recommend that you regularly change your login password. Place passwords on your credit card and bank accounts and avoid using anything identifying that a thief could discover.
  • Keep an eye open for suspicious fraudulent e-mails. Even from companies you know or do business with, be extremely suspicious of any e-mail that:
    • Asks you to confirm, update or provide sensitive information
    • Urges you to respond immediately
    • Uses pop-up windows to collect sensitive information
    • Contains typographical or grammatical errors

Do not provide account numbers, Social Security Numbers or bank account details over the Internet unless you initiated the contact and your connection is secure. If you receive e-mails that request identifying or financial information, do not respond to them - delete them. Legitimate companies, including our bank, will never request identifying information from you via e-mail. This includes your Social Security number, account numbers, credit card numbers, PINs and passwords. If you receive a suspicious e-mail claiming to come from our bank, please notify us immediately by calling your local branch.

If You Become a Victim

How can you tell if you've become a victim of fraud?

  • Unexplained charges or withdrawals from your financial accounts
  • Failing to receive bills
  • Receiving calls from collectors or companies about loans you didn't apply for, merchandise or services you didn't buy
  • Receiving credit cards for which you did not apply
  • Receiving bills from unfamiliar sources
  • Receiving letters that ask you to confirm address changes that you did not initiate
  • Denial of credit for no apparent reason

Where You Can Go For Help

If you suspect that you've given information to a fraud artist, it's important to act immediately.

If you inadvertently provided account numbers, passwords or PINs, there are things you can do to protect your financial accounts. First of all, contact your local branch to report your suspicions.
